The IRL comfirmed this weekend at Sonoma that turbo-charged powerplants will return for 2011. The new formula is yet to be decided, but said it will either be 4 or 6 cylinder with single or dual turbos producing about 750 horsepower. Another engine "summit" will be held in September to finalize specs and participant manufacturers.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
More power is definately needed in those slugs and what better sound is there than a turbo? The 4 or 6 cylinder right now is more relevant to manufacturers, so hopefully it will bring 3-4 new players. But while this is good news, I'm not getting too excited until I actually see (and hear ;) ) one built and running.
And in other news, the IRL and Firestone will adopt an "option" tire for road/street courses next year.

Shocking.
Next you're going to tell us they're considering different tire compounds for each race.

I love all of the complaints about not being more like Champ Car and then when they start to go in that direction, everyone complains again.
I think there's another forum specially made for you people.;)
Crappy attitude!!

The variance in sound quality of turbo engines is quite wide...Some are good, some are not...
Whatever engine configuration they choose, I hope they can manage to keep the cars loud and aurally exciting...Ala CART or Turbo era F1...
Some recent turbo charged racecars (Audi R8, ALMS mazda, Lola-AER) are very uninspiring sound wise...
Someone should resurrect the Reynard and Lola Chassis and then it'd be just like old times !! Get rid of the tubs they use now.Turbo or not,a Crapwagon is a Crapwagon is a Crapwagon.

It's his half a$$ attempts in trying to go in Champ Cars direction that upsets most of us. Besides, the house that was open wheel racing was burned down a long time ago, so FTG trying to build from the ashes is a futile attempt.

It's not bitching. The fact is that after all of the crap North American open wheel (no commentaries, Watson, please ;) ) and the fans like us went threw, it still blows our mind at what it was all for.
All ovals, all U.S. races, all American dirt/short trackers, and stock-block engines wasn't it. It's the hypocrisy that kills us. I'm sure there are not many here that oppose the turbos, the well balance of oval and road/street courses, and the other adoptions of CART/ChampCar, it just hurts that every thing had to be destroyed just so we could start over again.
Don't know forum you're talking about, but if it's the "Did All of This Need to Happen Just So Tony George Could Be an Idiot and Ruin Every Thing" fourm, then please provide a link.

Beautiful racecars, but I'm talking about the engine note...have you heard these cars in person?...they are not particularly exciting. Fairly quiet and very flat sounding...nothing like a Champcar...
The rotary in the ALMS mazda a couple of seasons ago was very nice...

While the R8 in it's heyday didn't sound like the CC we know, it's a completely different beast, apples to oranges and yes I did like it. Now the R10 is a bit too quiet for me, but then again I've come to love it for it's stealth-like ability to suddenly appear w/out sound in the competitions mirrors, only to be swallowed up in an instant and then passed and left to deal with the wake of unstable air that soon follows.
The Mazda I saw in 05' or 06' was awe inspiring. The cannon-like sound that came as it passed you shifting gears left a face wide grin that took days to leave. :D
As for the CC sound, I was never a fan of the Cosworth anyways, but the predecessors in Mercedes, Honda and Toyota were very cool. :)

#3.Anything else that smells like the dead corpse of CART/Champ car?
And please, for the love of everything that is sacred, don't lump open wheel racing into the mess that is Indy car racing!
If the complaint is Tony George is a complete idiot who could have fixed Indy car racing, but failed miserably, then it's spot on!

Yea, that mazda was not turbo-charged ...it was the Renesis-20B 3-rotor and as you say, it was awesome...Best sounding car on the grid!
2007-2008 The Mazda uses the turbo 2.0l four cylinder AER engine, which sounds very flatulent unfortunately...
