It was another brilliantly sunny and warm day at Mosport. Blue skies, sports cars and a competitive field tempted me trackside.

Great shots JL.
A thoroughly enjoyable race to watch. Too bad for the Lizards, a hard fought race but I fear Porsche is now again behind the 8 ball as Ferrari seems to have recaptured some HP, speed and aero over them.
C'mon Stuttgart, help out your teams and unlike your P2 cars, do it fairly and you'll have a great lot of more competitive cars to trounce the dancing horse cars.

JL seems to have found Moss Corner...
Sorry, I missed this remark earlier.
Yep, I found Moss Corner. And I found a ten foot fence. Earlier in the day I was at turn three. And I found another ten foot fence. At the top of turn two, I found, you guessed it, a ten foot fence. Ditto turn nine.
We have lost many fine spots from which to photograph at Mosport, and it makes my blood boil. Moss Corner is not nearly as good as it used to be. The top of turn two was a great spot for photos. Not anymore. Not only do the fences spoil things for photographers, it makes viewing for spectators very difficult. I've been shooting at Mosport for twenty five years, and I was forced to find new spots this past weekend. I was having to shoot from areas I had never been to before. The fences also limit things for the professional photographers shooting trackside; I didn't see any cutouts in the fence at the hairpin, for example.
No doubt we have the insurance companies to thank for this mess. I think if this trend continues, my days of attending Mosport might be numbered. The price of progress, I suppose. Of course, it could be much worse; I could be at the Toronto Indy. Heck, I wouldn't go there even if it was free!
Sorry for the rant; we now return to our happy thread. :)

I use a Fuji S5200, a point 'n shoot with a big zoom. Post editing in Paint Shop, because I'm too lazy to learn PhotoShop . The Fuji is not the ideal tool for this sort of photography. In fact, it was giving me fits on Saturday. Unless pre-focused, it is dreadfully slow to find the subject, so this negates any sort of action shot and many missed shots. Also, it's not good for panning shots with a low shutter speed, you know, the kind where the subject is crispy, but the background is a blur. I've tried hundreds of shots at various shutter speeds, but can only produce a sharp photo with a very high speed, perhaps, 1/1000th. Makes for a very boring image, I think. It's very disappointing, as I used to be able to get really nice pans with my old 35mm SLR.
I'm thinking of a new camera, but I'm not interested in lugging around extra lenses, so I want to avoid a DSLR. So far, though, I haven't found anything suitable on the market. I'll just keep looking and waiting.

After shooting altogether to many frames of asphalt and empty track I moved up to a digital SLR last Boxing day. I don't know a lot about cameras but knew enough that I needed something that was essentially idiot proof with a much faster shutter speed. I'm currently using a Canon EOS Rebel XTI and still finding my way around its many features. I'm pleased with the product and have only used it in normal automatic mode and intend to become more familiar with it's potential performance as race events go by.
Clarkfan
08-28-2008, 11:36 AM
Move the dial from the little green box (fully automatic) to the sport mode (the thing that looks like a runner) and you will have use of the maximum shutter speeds available.
The only problem with the XTi is the lack of a large buffer that allows you to shoot in bursts. Optically it is good and shares a similar processor to many of Canon's higher range cameras.
And, are you aware of the 1.6x factor with the XTi????
Vandretti
08-28-2008, 03:23 PM
Clarkfan:
Firstly, as Mike earlier indicated, welcome to the BB. we're all pretty harmless in here and share each other's passion for motorsport.
Secondly and presumably moving the camera's mode dial to the 'running man' icon will not only provide maximum shutter speed but also a crisper image if I shoot at 200 ISO and in large resolution format.
With regard to the 1.6 factor I am led to believe that the sub-frame sensor on the XTi means that it has a smaller angle of view (by a factor of 1/1.6x) than a full-frame camera with any given lens. While most properly called a "crop factor", the 1.6x ratio is most commonly referred to as the "focal length multiplier". Any lens used on the Rebel XTi will have the same field of view as one with a 1.6x greater focal length when attached to a 35mm camera. (For example, a 100mm lens on the XTi will show the same field of view as a 160mm lens on a camera with a 35mm frame size.) This means that the 18-55mm kit lens for the XTi has a coverage roughly equivalent to that of a 29-88mm lens on a 35mm camera.
Therefore if I understand it correctly, if I use my 75-300mm zoom lens the coverage would be roughly equivalent to 120-480mm. Have I got that right?
sadler21
08-28-2008, 03:35 PM
It would be the same as the 120-480mm measurements you give assuming you were shooting with a Canon 5D or some other Full-framed camera.
Personally I prefer the 1.3x crop of the 1 series.
Not really sure why you want high shutter speeds for motorsports, the AF is the bigger issue for racing as to shutter speeds.

Kind of, sort of. The 75-300mm lens remains just that on a 5D, but on an XTi it becomes equivalent to 120-480.
And while I agree that the 9-point autofocus system on a 5D or a 40D is essential higher shutter speeds do come in handy if you want to truly stop the action. But to me both of these truly come into play when your camera can support high burst rates (ie fps).
Anyways, for the Canon fans out there they have just announced the new 50D with a 15.1 mp, Digic IV processor.

Vic,
If you have Firefox.. download Fxif. It allows you to right-click images and under properties it displays the EXIF data for each one.
Used a Canon 1D with Sigma 100-300 F4, sometimes with 1.4x and 2x Tconverters. Almost all were shot at the Tv setting and set to the shutter speed I wanted to use.
