Former Chicago Cubs 3rd base great and radio commentator Ron Santo passed away last night.
I know there isn't too many baseball fans here and not sure how many ever got to listen to him during a Cubs game, but the world of baseball is worse with Ronnie gone.
While he played well before my time and I've only worked/lived in Chicago for the past 5 years, I feel deeply saddened by his loss. Can't imagine there has ever been a former player, announcer, or fan that lived and died by his team as much as Santo did.
Despite the Cubs being my adopted team (the Minnesota Twins will always be number 1 for me), listening to Pat Hughes and Ron call a game was a true pleasure every game and have made the past 5 summers ones I will always remember.
I love listening to ballgames on the radio and hearing some of the great personalities and voices from various teams is part of the reason I love the game so much. When Santo's passing is added to the recent loss of Dave Niehaus from the Seattle Mariners, baseball next year will feel very empty for me. I'm just glad Vin Sculley and Bob Uecker are still kicking.
Rest in Peace, #10!
